This just might be the coolest thing ever. It's history, food, and pet seamonkeys all rolled into one! I started my sourdough starter last night, using the wild muscadine grapes and organic rye flour (and filtered water). There were some promising looking bubbles in it this morning. When I get home tonight, after helping with the improv shows, I'll strain out the grapes and add bread flour and more water. With any luck, I'll be making my first loaf of sourdough bread with it next weekend.
Burning Man mural @ 02:03 am
dj_warhammer:
This year Burning Man commissioned me to come out early and paint an 8x8' mural at Center Camp. It was located on the fence surrounding the outside of the Cafe on the Wheel, one of the most active areas of the entire burn. I had complete creative liberty. My actual space turned out to be 8x12', which was a wonderful last minute challenge as I had to alter the dimensions laid out in my sketches. They gifted me a stunning location too, really an honor. I never feel this way about my art but I think it turned out very well. I decided to create a piece tied to my experiences this year at Transformus. The first responders and everyone else came through it all with flying colors. To celebrate this I painted a giant colorful phoenix with flames in the background. My phoenix always look like eagles, so it went along with the American Dream theme by pure happenstance. I was going to dedicate it to those who were there at the Transformus temple burn fiasco but instead decided to inscribe it to everyone who's ever gone through a fire and come out stronger. I felt it was more in line with true burner ethos. Painting this was also a personal test I gave myself, what with my carpal tunnel and all. Now I know I can still do it! Click on the cut for many and larger pics. ( Flying Colors )I hope you like it.

I checked the info, and there was no mention as to whether this was appropriate/allowed, so if it isn't, I apologize, and feel free to delete the post. I'm looking for suggestions on good resources for learning how to knit, crochet, and sew. I'm well aware that I an Google or go to the library or bookstore, but there are tonnes of books and websites out there, and it would be great to have someone recommend something that they found particularly helpful, so I have less information to wade through! Thanks so much!

I think today is a day for the gym and The Dark Knight. I saw Pineapple Express a few weeks ago, but am obliged not to post my thoughts until I've seen two more movies to pair (trio?) with it. I'm seriously behind on movie-watching. --- I've started grad school at Towson. (I managed to get an A in my Applied Statistical Analysis course at FIT, btw.) I'm taking Applied Partial Differential Equations and Financial Derivatives. I am slightly concerned about APDE since I got a C+ in Ordinary DEs three years ago and have not touched a DE since. I'm also slightly concerned about the other course because, well, it's a grad-level math course. I got a whole lot done last Friday when I went to Towson, though. Paid for my parking pass (though it didn't get mailed by the time I had my first class), got my Towson ID, got my third-party billing straightened out for my tuition and my books, and turned in my Immunization Form. Eight years ago, satisfying any of those would have been an excuse to take the rest of the day off. --- I am not going to discount any possible future employment just because I am not currently where I want to be. And that's all I'll say about that. I still have to retain a small portion of mysteriousness. --- My car continues to not malfunction after having retrieved it from the depths of Raleigh. I hope this continues for some time. Thanks be to the extended warranty I purchased from CarMax, it will last for a couple of years after I've finished paying the car off since I made the bold decision to go for a 36 month payment plan. --- I'd blog about work, but to what point? --- I'm looking forward to actually spending some time in my apartment for a while. It looks pretty screwed up right now and I might actually want to clean and straighten up. --- I'm going to get rid of my cable TV soon. It costs too much for the little pleasure I receive from it. I pretty much use it to watch DVR'd episodes of Pardon the Interruption. Despite football season being upon us, I don't plan on watching a lot of TV and would be better served by studying and exercising in my spare time, anyway.

Before we left Atlanta, brazilia's parents gave us a bag full of muscadines from their backyard. I wonder if I can use them successfully to make a grape sourdough starter. I think they have been washed, so I'm not sure how much wild yeast is left on the grape skins though. Sounds like a worthwhile experiment anyway.

Well I had one friend make me very sad with a bit of childish behavior, and the Hyatt shutting down parties was kind of a bummer, but overall I think I appreciated Dragon this year more than I ever have before. I think someone up top's getting at least part of the message.... Crowds flowed better. Floor layouts made more sense. And as I write this the DC LJ is flooded with people in charge stepping forward to say, "Hey, that was me running that thing, thanks for your support, and please let me know if you have any concerns." That in and of itself goes a long way. Mind you, I still find a lot of practices (or the lack thereof) reprehensible. Having people stand in line for 4+ hours only to be told there's no room for them will never be cool--especially when you know damn well at the start exactly how many seats you're gonna have available. But the truth is I went into this thing expecting much worse. So hooray for low standards, I guess. POC promo seemed to go quite well, but you never know with these things. We completely ran out of flyers, if that can be considered an indicator. I had fun with it, at least. Seeing people's faces light up when they heard the old Super Mario music playing was a payoff in and of itself. God, things really were so much simpler back then! Best line of the weekend has to go to Wes (or Dubya Dubya Dubya, as I sometimes call him): as we sit during a slow period at our draped-in-the-American-flag promo table, he suddenly perks up, pecks around on the internet for a minute, and then comes back with a very disappointed "Damn, VPILF.com is already taken." :-D

Washington Improv Theater's fall run starts tomorrow. I volunteered to be box office manager for the Friday shows. And while most of the shows are political in theme, I'm getting increasingly excited about the zombie show. In fact, I think the final show on September 27th would be a great time and place to demo what I plan to wear for this year's dczombielurch.
